2009...a summary of sorts.

2009. Whoa, loads to say about the past 365 days. I'll take a stab at a quick summary of some highlights, blessings, and adventures.

Economy
The recession of 2009 impacted us all. While I'm still blessed with full time employment, it was certainly a dynamic year at work. Through all of the changes and decrease in revenues, I have a new appreciation for my employment and my opportunities at Caterpillar.

RLO
This is a new Three Letter Acronym used around the office in 2009. RLO = Rolling Layoff = time off of work without pay. In an effort to control cost, many employees at Caterpillar were placed on RLO. I was asked to take 4 weeks without pay, knowing that I would have a position to return to after the time off. I learned the ropes of the Illinois unemployment system, and I found that time off without access to work e-mail was a good thing. Many folks called if Fun-cation or Play-off. I don't want to take the impact of no work lightly, but I certainly had a rejuvenated spirit after my RLO weeks.

Brazil
During my July RLO I participated in a mission trip in the Brazilian Amazon. Talk about appreciation of my job...putting my Portuguese skills to use in ministry was very encouraging. I could have never predicted my language skills would be used in this capacity. I'm prayerful about the next trip in March of 2010! Special prayers for those in need in the interior of the rain forest.

John in July
My brother came to the US for a training class. He was able to take vacation and visit the family in the Mid-west. While we missed his wife and kids, it was a treat to have him around the house. I love my family!

Adopt - A - School I have volunteered in a Peoria School District Middle School as a mentor with the Adopt-A-School program. I volunteer with the Society of Women of Engineers with the goal of inspiring a passion for science, math, and the engineering career in middle school girls. It has been a wonderful experience as I learn first had the importance of education on our society. Indeed, it takes a village to raise a child.

Adopt-A-Block
Every 2nd and 4th Saturdays I participate in an Adopt-A-Block ministry. The concept is pretty simple...visit houses on a block and build a relationship with the residents. Pray for their needs and help them out as possible. HUGE return on investment for me. My faith is strengthened and I formed friendships that I treasure.

Old Testament I read it. I'm reading through the Bible in a year. During the first part of 2009 I was reading the old testament for the first time in its entirety. Sometime challenging, always very rewarding. My faith has been refined by the experience.

Dec 25
CHRISTMAS! It was a very special holiday in 2009. I celebrated with my parents and sister in Indiana. I will forever treasure the time together and the memories.

Dec 28
The day Jeff Hoerr asked me to be his wife. I said yes. I changed residents and now live on Cloud 9. Sooner or later I'll come back to earth, but now, I'm in the sky. His proposal and timing was perfect.

The more things change, the more they stay the same Amidst the year of significant changes on a global, national, and personal level, I have found a consistent stride in my life in Peoria. I suppose I can call it a sense of peace or contentment. The ability to establish roots yet be excited about the changes in the future is very comforting and exciting.

Thanks for the memories, 2009! 2010, ready or not, here I come!

Jada

PS. If any of you are wondering, the vegetarian "thing" of 2008 hung around in 2009. In fact, it is going with me into 2010.

Photo of the Week - Christmas

Merry Christmas. Last week was simply fantastic, complete with all of the traditional celebration. I can say it was the sweetest Christmas I recall. In addition to the warmth of family and reunions with friends, the week was also filled with especially bright moments that warmed and humbled my heart.

I had the chance to humble myself and begin to understand the magnitude of the meaning of Christmas when holding a newborn baby, Noah Scott Wanner. What a blessing it was to meet and hold this little guy. Ok, the picture isn't "birth announcement" quality, but I think it was pretty special!

On Dec 23rd, I had the chance to serve with my parents at Kate's Kitchen. This Kitchen offers a free meal to any Bluffton resident in need on Wednesday nights. I have joined in with my parents in the past by helping serve the food. This time I jumped in with my Dad and stood with him as he greeted the guests. I was touched by the relationships he had with the folks and the chance to get to know them too. I never cease to be amazed by the 10 fold returns that can be received from serving others.

Whether you head to the gym to work off holiday calories or stay at home to relax in your new snuggie, enjoy the final days of 2009. I will likely be doing both!

Ba Hum Bug. By Saturday evening this week, I had my fill of "holiday cheer." Too many Christmas cookies, busy shopping malls, and worries about the "perfect" gift. My spirits softened on Saturday night when I went to a Christmas worship program. I was brought back to center with a much needed reminder of the meaning of the holiday. A new sense of joy has filled my heart for the final days leading up to Christmas.

On Sunday evening I celebrated Christmas with Jeff and his extended family. Hopefully you can see the renewed joy in my smile with this week's photo. It was snapped at the party. My snazzy hat was a gift from Jeff's mom.

Merry Christmas!

Friends,

Is it really almost Midnight?! This is what I was exclaiming moments before this week's photo was snapped. What kept me up past my bedtime on a Saturday night? Baking Christmas cookies? Holiday decorations? Writing Christmas cards? Nope! Jeff and I were focused on the challenge of putting together his son's "globe puzzle". Jared helped us get started on the globe and we were quickly enthralled. I realized how well I know my Geography of the Americas and how little I truly understand about Africa and Asia. Questions like Where are the Aleutian Islands? and What is next to Zambia? were being repeated many times as we tried to put it all together. It made me chuckle as we sang Joy to the World on Sunday in church. I didn't get many Christmas cards written on Saturday night, but maybe the lesson I learned was a bit more important anyway.

Enjoy the week!

Deck the Halls and Fa la la la la!

This week found me putting up my Christmas decorations, buying my first gifts of the season and attending holiday parties. This week's photo showcases my little tree and an awesome gift! I got this "like new" backpack in a Christmas exchange in which every gift was expected to be $10.00 or less and from a 2nd hand store (goodwill, salvation army, etc). There were some treasures in the mix, and I was very excited about my new tool for adventures. Oh, the places to go!

Enjoy the blessings of the season.

Friends,

Happy Thanksgiving! Not that I'm against a good bargain shopping opportunity, but I didn't take part in the Black Friday madness this weekend. Jeff and I trekked to Bluffton for the holiday. On Friday afternoon we were hanging out with Jill and found ourselves on a carousel inside a furniture store. Hmmm...what? where? why? Yeah, we didn't really get it either, but we had fun. I'm not sure that this will turn into a tradition, but we enjoyed it this Thanksgiving.

Three Cheers for Blessings and Joy beyond measure!

Friends,

Friday was my last day in the office before the Thanksgiving Holiday. Yet with such an active weekend, it really didn't feel like vacation had started. Here are a few pictures of the highlights!

I had the chance to chat with Santa at my favorite local Nursery. Jeff and I stopped in at Hoerr Nursery on Saturday to enjoy the Holiday open house.

On Sunday, our church partnered with another church to host a free Thanksgiving Meal for those in need. We had food gift bags for the guests. Lots of work, but great reward!

On Sunday night, I had a sweet reunion with girlfriends from Caterpillar. This photo shows us gals all smiles after a few hours of time to catch up and reconnect.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Friends,

This weekend took me back to Indiana for an annual shopping trip with girlfriends. Check out the visual showing the results of our labor. We made the most of a 30% off coupon at the Gap! Let's just be thankful we make this journey once a year. I'll openly resist a commentary on excess consumption....I'll focus on the reminder of the great friends I have and the laughs of the weekend.

On Sunday, I hurried back to Peoria to catch the 2nd service at church. Jeff had a chance to speak during part of the message. Pretty cool stuff shared about serving in the community. Here is a link: http://www.richwoods.org/sermon-media/

Have a great week.

I had a great time hanging around Michael W. Smith on Friday night! Well, not actually with him, but around him...or at least an image of him! I went with Jeff to volunteer for Compassion International at a MWS concert, and we were stationed at the table with the life size picture of the star. I was "along for the ride", yet found myself enjoying the volunteer work and the show much more than I expected. I was touched by the profiles of children in need of sponsorship and support. Jeff is an advocate for the agency and after my experience on Friday night, I better understand his passion for the work.

Yep, I still have the lyrics to Friends running through my mind!

Cheers, Jada

Friends,

After a week of rain, the sun came out of hiding just in time for the weekend. Perfect fall weather to rake leaves and...watch football. No, this week's picture is not my Halloween costume! I actually went to a U of I football game dressed in Orange this weekend. And much to the crowd's surprise and excitement, the fighting Illini pulled out a win for the Illinois fans. It was a beautiful fall day at the game. And don't worry...I still cheer for the Boilers!

Happy November.

Friends,

It was beautiful fall weather this weekend after a few days of rain. On Saturday, I helped Jeff and other friends work on a landscaping project at Maranatha Church. OK, so I was rather quick to take a break for photos, but I did do some manual labor too. These photos show Jeff sketching out the designs. You can also see the BIG truck we used for the job. I had a blast helping Jeff pick out the plants for the job first thing in the morning. We were driving around the nursery in the truck.

Today we went on a bike ride with Jeff's son. He enjoys taking pictures and snapped this artistic view of us. We three had fun watching the leaves fall around us.

Beautiful Fall Days!

Enjoy, Jada

Friends,

I just returned from a trip to Long Beach, California. I should have palm trees and sunshine in my photo...but instead I have a picture of friends and co-workers from Caterpillar and the local section of Society of Women Engineers (SWE). A few of us had the chance to attend the SWE Conference. I did get out to see the beach in the mornings before the seminar and career fair were underway. I came home inspired and challeneged by the messages I heard at the conference. Overall, I'm very thankful for the opportunities I have had in life to pursue an education and employment. It was great to travel, but oh soo nice to return home.

Have a great week.

Friends,

I had my fourth week of layoff from Caterpillar this past week. I jokingly called it my "laycation" on facebook as it was relaxing similar to a vacation. On Tuesday Jeff and I went to St. Louis to visit his daughter Lauren. We went all over town browsing in shops and found ourselves having dinner at a Pizzeria named PI. The math fan in me loved it merely for its name. The company, atmosphere, and food were top notch too.

Back to work today. Adventures from a business trip to come next week.

Have a great week.

Sweet, Sweet, Sweet!

Lots of sweet food and sweet moments this past week. You can see the monster cookie my "little sister" Becki and her friend baked up in my kitchen this past week. YUM!

My roommate and friend Crystal married her sweetie, Michael, this weekend. The wedding reception was held at the Peoria Zoo. Notice the detail with the Bride and Groom giraffe cake topper. Congratulations to the lovely couple.

Enjoy some sweetness this week!

Friends,

Celebrate Fall! This was the theme on Wednesday evening when Jeff introduced me to Christ Orchard. What a fun "field trip". I must confess that we didn't actually pick our own apples...I was too busy snapping pictures around the store. Honey Crisp was my favorite.

Enjoy.

Friends,

Glorious weekend with little to no commitments. Plenty of time to relax, connect with friends, and enjoy the outdoors.

I went to Peoria's Oktoberfest and reminisced about the days at Berne Swiss Days as a youth! On Saturday AM I had the chance to snap a few pictures of my friend Nicki and her son Caden. I'm realizing how much I enjoy photography...good thing I enjoy it, because I still have soo much to learn!

Jeff and I went on a bike ride today with his son Jared. We stopped by Dairy Queen for a treat before heading home. Perfect combo of Sunday afternoon activities...little bit of the great outdoors and a little bit of sweetness.

Have a blessed week.

Cheers,
Jada

Friends,

Yes, I missed a week! I was on a rolling layoff from Caterpillar the first week in September, and I allowed myself to fully disconnect! Now I'm back in the swing of things! After posting this blog, I'm heading out the door to go to a U2 concert in Chicago. Yep...good times! Details to come...

Last week my friends Crystal and Michael had an African Themed Wedding Shower. Crystal is my roommate...at least for the next 3 weeks until her wedding day. See this week's photo to catch a glimpse of the happy couple.

Have a great week.

Friends,

Is it really August? Beautiful, mild weather swept through Peoria this weekend. Perfect for taking a bike ride on the Rock Island Trail! Jeff and I headed out early this afternoon for an enjoyable ride. We snapped a few pictures along the way. What a way to spend the day!

Enjoy!

Friends,

It is back to school time in Peoria! Most schools are heading back to session last week or this coming week. To get some of the kids in the community prepared, community churches hosted a Backpack Bash. The Bash included games, food, and backpack distribution. We had an incredible turnout for the event. I volunteered and helped by facilitating games for the kids.

Enjoy this week's photos. Yes, they gave me a bullhorn at one point in the afternoon!

Friends,

Wow, what a week! It started with a few days of family fun in Brown County, Indiana. Mom, Dad, Jill, and I headed for the hills (or at least what Indiana folks call hills!). It was a relaxing few days at the State Park. We visited the quaint towns of Nashville and Story, Indiana. We had a few challenging days on our bikes and relaxing evenings at the pool.

This weekend was also jam packed with fun. Highlight was a cookout and farewell for my friend, Jessie, as she prepares to return to home in China. Jessie is a friend from both work and church who will be greatly missed!

Work hard to ride up the hill...the down hill trip makes it all worth it!!

Cheers,

Friends,

I have a new respect for all Cross Country runners. This Saturday some friends and I ran a 5k on grass. Hard core! The challenge of running on grass was significantly more than any of us expected. But good news: we all finished strong and placed in our age group!

This week's photo shows my roommate, Crystal, and I showcasing our hardware from the race. The photo was taken at the wedding of our friends, Bryson and Danell. Congratulations to the newlyweds!

Enjoy the week and keep running!

Friends,

The best way I can describe the past week would be pleasant. On two occasions I had the chance to have dinner with friends and catch up on life. I also embraced a free spirit and went to a concert downtown Peoria and recalled my college days when I listened to the same group play at Purdue. Of course, I left home without my camera for these events!

I had a stand at the Peoria Riverfront Market this Saturday. I was selling my greeting cards and had a decent flow of customers before the rain started. I closed shop early and headed home. Motivated by the hobby I snapped a few photos in the backyard. I'll be back at the market on Aug 15!

Enjoy!

Friends,

This week I returned to work after two weeks off from Caterpillar. I enjoyed getting back to work, but often found myself reflecting on the experiences from my recent time in Brazil...which is a good thing!

This weekend I headed to Asheville, NC with my girlfriends from high school. Great road trip full of adventures. Beth, Terra, Amy and I had a great lunch on Friday at the Pisgah Inn Restaurant. Great food, view, and company!

Have a blessed week. Look for the beauty around you.

Friends,

Thank you for your prayers and encouragement as I traveled to Brazil last week. I arrived home safely and touched by the experience. I sensed God's blessing throughout the travel and felt His presence in our work. I traveled with a small team from my church in Peoria with the purpose of identifying opportunities for our congregation to expand the efforts in Brazil. We are now praying for the vision on how to return and continue the work.

We partnered with many organizations during the quick visit in Brazil. Here are a few of the most telling photos from the trip. New friends, hardships due to flooding, the beautiful image of hope.

Sometimes words & photos aren't enough. For an even better understanding of the lives of those living in the jungle today, please see the videos below:
Ray of Hope - one of the organizations we partnered with last week.

Water Filter demo - the first plastic water filter (cement version is in this video) was installed in Brazil last week. Much easier to transport and distribute, yet equally as effective in giving clean water to the people

Thank you again for all of the support.
