The fingerprints 2012 left on me. . .

fingerprints from 2012 At the end of each year I have a post that breaks the framework of this picture blog. 2012 is no exception. . . Here you go: Each of the following experiences impacted me in significant ways and left me molded into a new person as I head into the new year. Bring on 2013!

2012 Leadership Summit I was selected to coordinate the 2012 Chairman's Leadership Summit - a leadership training session for Caterpillar's top 400 folks. I am, no doubt, a more confident woman post this event. Surely the thrill of sitting at right hand to the Caterpillar chairman impacted me. But more than that, I’m reminded that I have the capacity to lead a team to deliver one spectacular event. Check out this photo of me with Zac Brown Band. . .even if you don't like country, this is way cool!

Conferences and Retreats Beyond coordinating the Caterpillar Summit, I had the opportunity to participate in multiple conferences and retreats: Church retreat facilitated by Dr. Larry Crabb, Willow Creek Leadership Summit with Jeff, Society of Women Engineers National Conference for Caterpillar and a Family Life Marriage Retreat with Jeff. I’m such a nerd that loves to learn and enjoyed every minute of these events. I deepened many friendships through these conferences. Further, I’m a better employee, a better wife and a more faithful daughter of God.

Mexico Mission Trip This was no ordinary mission work trip. Jeff and I traveled with family and new friends by bus to Magdelena de Kino (yes, by bus!). We stayed with Jeff’s sister Joan and her husband Bill and their family in Mexico. Bill and Joan lead an orphanage, school and church in Mexico. I enjoyed getting to know Jeff’s family better. I enjoyed squeezing and kissing on cute Mexican kids. Most of all, I enjoyed witnessing a very close example of what it means to pick up and start anew in a new land with a new calling.

Smart Step-Mom I was asked to join a Step Mom support group this year. I struggle finding words that describe what this group has meant to me. Here are just a few: Amazing women, embracing my role in all circumstances, intentional prayer for the kids, support when I think I’m going crazy.

Family Vacation Our family of 6 packed into a mini-van for a week. It doesn’t matter much what we did, where we went or what we ate. The point is, we did it together for seven days. It surely wasn’t always peaceful and it wasn’t always fun. However, it was altogether always a family vacation that I will always remember as a turning point for me as a step-mom.

Running Group I somehow invited myself to a running group with women on Saturday Mornings. These ladies are great motivation to get me running again on a regular basis. I grew quite lazy as a runner after marriage. Thanks to this group, I’m in better shape physically and socially in 2012. More importantly, I’m in better shape spiritually.

Grad School Both Lauren & Jordan have applied to graduate school this year. Lauren will pursue Library Sciences and Jordan will go on to med school. It has been a sweet process to read the application essays, discuss the schools they selected and simply be a part of their lives during a hopeful time of change and transition. Such fun to dream about where they will be in 2013!

Adopt-a-Block Jeff and I have served at AAB and Richwoods since we just started dating. Much of that time I have been fraught with frustrations with this ministry and the low participation, the little change in the lives serving and those served. But I kept going, teeth gritting, and heart heavy. And then 2012 was different! New volunteers, new energy, new ideas. My heart was broken and I have newfound hope and enthusiasm. I believe that more time is needed for me to fully learn and understand what God is intending to teach me through this ministry. But this I know deep in my heart: Both I and AAB are on the brink of something big.

Planning for Tanzania
Jeff and I will travel to Tanzania in January. I don’t know what to expect. I read the itinerary, I look at the map, I search what I can online and I still don’t really know what to expect. What will Tanzania look like? (surely not like the tourist pictures online). What will Tanzania taste like? (Like I know anything about Tanzanian food!?) What will Tanzania feel like? (Besides being hot, I don’t really know where I will stay, what I should wear, who’s hands I will hold) And most vague of all, what will Tanzania do to me? I am accompanying my husband on this mission trip to seek opportunities for the future. (And what does that mean? Whose future? Mine? Holy Kamoly!) I’m not in control and of course, that doesn’t feel all too good. I’m trusting God as it is really my only option. I have grown in my faith and ability to not be in control. Even if the trip teaches me nothing and reveals to me not one moment of inspiration, it has already been a journey!

Knees
Jeff is my spiritual leader and has been in that role since our 2nd or 3rd date when he challenged me to read the bible every day. I did, for awhile. I’m starting to pick up daily reading of the Bible again for the umpteenth time in my life and I’m sure it will be beneficial. I ebb and flow in how I practice spiritual disciplines . . . which I suppose by default is undisciplined. But sometime in 2012, Jeff brought me to my knees to pray with him before work. We have been praying on our knees ever since. We miss a day now and again, but not many. These are sweet moments that I treasure. This will surely become part of who we are as we pause and strive to truly humble ourselves.

As the holiday comes to an end, Jeff and I prepare to pack away our decorations and start our January health kicks. And just when we considered the holiday part of our past, we received our sweetest card in the mail. The card in the pictures below came from Ruth. She lives across the street. Ruth is well into her 80s and can't see all too well anymore. But she doesn't let that stop her. She takes a daily walk or two, keeps a garden and makes us cookies every year for Christmas. I love her sweet ways and thoughtfulness.

Jeff and I volunteered for Compassion International on Saturday. It was a bust of a volunteering event. With ZERO Christmas gifts purchased and a 'to do' list longer than my arm, I was a bit anxious to be volunteering for an unsuccessful effort. As is always the case, God surprised me with his creativity in bringing a dear friend into our path at the volunteer event. Jeff and I spent a lovely afternoon with our friend Melissa Dobrak. It had been months since we connected with her. Three cheers for reconnecting and God's creative way to make it happen!

What does it say if Jeff and I skipped out on part of the Marriage Conference we went to this weekend to visit the Milwaukee Art Museum? To me is says that I have a husband that knows how to take me out on a date and have fun. We had a blast together this weekend. We learned a few things about our marriage and most importantly enjoyed each other's company. Enjoy the picture!

A 'balmy' 60 degree Thanksgiving Day in Peoria made for a great opportunity for family pictures. Enjoy the sneak peak of our Christmas card!

Every year at this time, I post my photos from the Annual Thanksgiving Meal that our church hosts. I hate to be so predictable. But, each year, I'm surprised by the joy that overwhelms my heart during the event. I'm still deeply touched by the event. This year, our church feed 450 people. We had the food for 350 and somehow we made it stretch just far enough for everyone in line. This was a week full of many photo worthy moments. . . holding my newest great niece, toasting a friend's birthday at midnight (rare that I see the midnight hour, so truly a celebration!) and spending time on a photo shoot with my niece Laura. But my 'photo of the week' is a picture of my friends from the Society of Women Engineers Conference in Houston. I have gone to this event for seven consecutive years. Each year I leave encouraged as a professional woman. And, I'm strengthened by the bright women in my life. I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for the women who have gone before me.

Footloose & fancy free was the motto for my Saturday. Jeff and I headed over to Running Central, where Ethan works as a shoe salesman. Of course we got great customer service. On Sunday morning we popped out of bed to put on our new shoes and head for the streets. We are exercising in style!!

Jared and his friend drove Jeff and me to the Football game. . . at least most of the drive. When did our 'little guy' grow up to 6.0 ft and learn to drive?

This week surely had some ups and downs, as most weeks do if we are honest. A high for me was visiting with a friend, Elizabeth Grant. I had the chance to stop in Elizabeth's house on Wednesday as I delivered her family some fried chicken (her favorite!) for dinner. Elizabeth has terminal cancer and graciously accepts the help with meals. Her joy and sunshine during the visit perked up my rainy day and gave me a reason to smile. . . wait, wasn't that my role in visiting her? Discover more about Elizabeth at: http://www.deadmanskipping.com/ Some friends planned a benefit for Elizabeth and her family on Saturday. Great fun. Jeff especially liked his first massage. I enjoyed the goodies at the bake sale! Everyone attending loved that Elizabeth was able to attend and enjoy the day.

Jeff and I enjoyed a fall day by going for a walk in Springdale Cemetary. OK, spending an afternoon in a cemetary is not exactly my idea of fun . . . but Springdale is full of fall color this time of year. And the rolling hills made for some good exercise too.

The annual outing to Christ Orchard took place this weekend. It was a sunny and chilly autumn day. . . but not too chilly for me to enjoy a whimsical moment or two.

My Great-Uncle Fred Wenger passed away this week. Neat man! Worked hard, always found a reason to grin, and loved family. Seems appropriate to honor him by sharing a sweet picture of a family reunion I had while at his viewing this weekend. This picture is just a sampling of the special people I have hugged over the last days. Despite the sorrow of my uncle passing, I am overjoyed by the experiences this weekend.

When I was flying home from Seattle on Friday, I fell asleep on the plane before takeoff. About an hour later, I woke up feeling rested and ready for the day of travel. As I opened my eyes, I saw this beautiful sight outside of my window. Breath taking for anyone. . . especially a midwest girl.

This week's picture is a copy of the invitation that Jeff and I placed on every door in our neighborhood. Jeff had a vision of hosting a neighborhood party to 1) get to know our neighbors and 2) create awareness for a cause he supports. We had a good time walking the streets and handing out fliers. The turnout wasn't so great, but we didn't care. . . the experience was well worth it. I love the adventures I get to experience with that great husband of mine!

The promise of Fall is in the air. . . The start of a Football season and the fun of a long Labor Day weekend with family makes me day dream of the transition we are about to experience here in the mid-west.

Oh, my! I stuggle. . .do I post the superfical announcement of my new haircut or do I miss the joy of updating my weekly blog with my pictures when all I have is shot of my 'day to day?' Here you go . . . a picture snapped while I was deep in thought at work, showcasing my desk area & a new do. And let's not kid ourselves, for many of us ladies, a new haircut is a significant event.

Oh the places I've been this week! Awhile ago Jeff brought home a ham. After letting it set in the freezer, I gained the confidence to bake it. For whatever reason, cooking a ham seemed beyond the skills of this vegetarian. I cooked it fine but had a hard time cutting it. I turned the job over to Jeff. We agreed that he would be our 'ham cutter' moving forward.
It's off to Bradley dorms for Ethan this year. Cramped space, cinder block room, living with a stranger. Jeff and I are praying for him during this rite of passage!

What does it take for me to miss my weekly update? Family vacation to Canada! Great week visiting Indiana, Ohio and Toronto. Here is a picture of us all in the gardens of Casa Loma in Toronoto.
This week I had an amazing experience at the Global Leadership Summit simulcast in Peoria. I volunteered with Jeff at the Compassion International table. 9 kids were sponsored over the two day event. Yay!

I must confess I was not purposeful in taking pictures of our fun this week. I did snap a picture one night before dinner. I was proud of myself for 'whipping up' food for the family after getting home late from work. I'm no 'Becky Home Ecky', but my domestic skills have definately improved since being married!

This Saturday, I was a proud wife! Four churches in Peoria teamed together to complete various service projects around town. There were multiple landscaping projects at Peoria District 150 schools. Jeff did all of the designs and helped with the planning. And, of course, he did it in his humble style. I really had no idea how much work had gone into the planning. When I arrived at one of the sites, I had the coordinators hugging me and treating me like a celebrity just because I was Jeff's wife. Neat to see his impact on the community!
In the evening, I went to a murder mystery dinner with friends. I was Dolly Dee Seiner - Maker of Barbara Dolls! I didn't die, and I didn't committ a murder, but I did have fun dressing up and 'playing fancy.'
