Christmas allowed for many sweet moments with family. The time with the kids on Christmas Eve was especially fun. It was our best Christmas yet as a family. And it truly felt that way for me. . . .like a family.
We also traveled to Bluffton. Mom taught Meg and me to crochet. Clearly, I was struggling at first. Meg was a natural and had a scarf well on the way to being complete in the time it took me to crochet a 2" by 2" square.

Jeff and I hosted a Holiday Compassion Party in lieu of a traditional holiday gathering this year. We were thrilled that 60 of our friends and family gathered with us for dinner, a presentation about Compassion International (www.compassion.com), and time to socialize. We shared a message about the importance of safe water supply with the kids. At least one was listening as he made a Christmas Card.
Special post - Thankful for the lessons of the past week.
A week ago today, a tornado ripped through Washington, IL, a neighboring community. Hundreds of houses destroyed. Hundreds more damaged. The week went on as planned, but there was a dull ache in my heart as I watched the reports of the community digging out from the rubble. The ache will surely linger in our hearts as the rebuilding begins. However, I will use this ache as a positive reminder. I commit to thinking of the things I value most every time I hear mention of the 2013 Tornado in the days, weeks, months, years ahead. I commit to using it as a thanksgiving trigger for my faith, my family, my friends. I commit to using it as a reminder that my material belongings of this world are not mine to keep and will all fade away in time. I commit to thinking of the lyrics to the sweet song, Remind Me, Dear Lord.
The things that I love
I hold dear to my heart
They are borrowed and
Not mine at all
Jesus only let me use them
To brighten my life
So remind me, remind me dear Lord

Jeff and I had a free Saturday this week . . .which quickly got filled with errands and helping the kids get ready to go back to college and the 'weekend catch-up' routine. We did take time to visit Aunt Marilyn & Aunt Leona. In the midst of a hurried day, I took such joy in a peaceful moment when Jeff read to Aunt Marilyn.

This beautiful, yet simple, bouquet of flowers was a thank you gift from our neighbor Ruth. She joined us for dinner on Saturday night and shared these flowers as a token of her appreciation. When I went to her house today to pick them up, she invited me to look at her garden. With incredible wisdom that only 89 yrs of life can offer, she stated: "Now don't mind the weeds. Let's just enjoy the flowers." Ruth can't see well anymore, but enjoys the burst of color in the flowers. I enjoy it too!

Jeff's Uncle Mel passed away this past weekend after 92 years. Mel was a wonderful man who always seemed so jolly to me. His son Keith has a similar happy spirit. Keith, who lives in a handicapped home for adults, was a great joy as he sat with me during the funeral dinner. He was quick to remind me that we needed to celebrate because his Dad died. . . .an was in heaven with Jesus. It is fun to see how God provides joy in just the right doses!

Ross & Rosie's Wedding
Jeff and I celebrated our wedding anniversary this week with two family weddings. It was so sweet to look on as the couples exchanged their vows while holding my husband's hand reliving our vows in my heart. Both weddings had outdoor elements. Everyone in the family was pleased that we didn't relive the heat of our wedding day!
But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.

Summer time has allowed for Tassel Brothers to find the time to practice and perform. They played at a local coffee shop this weekend. This band is no longer a few kids trying to practice what they learned at lessons. They sounded so much more mature in their music this weekend (of course, what do I know about critiquing music?!).

Training for the Indy half marathon is strongly encouraged before running the course on race day. I know this to be a fact. Indeed, most people do. However, the joy of hanging out with my friends Jill and Paul Trimmel at the post race party caused me to forget conventional wisdom and run anyway. I finished and had fun. The pain will surely subside in a day or two or ten.
